Van M. Wardlaw
Executive Vice President, External Relations
Van Wardlaw, Executive Vice President for External Relations for TVA, is responsible for all aspects of TVA's government relations, customer relations, economic development and stakeholder relations efforts. Wardlaw has 35 years of diverse leadership experience in the planning and operation of commercial and customer sectors of the utility industry. He most recently served as senior vice president customer resources since 2011, where he has been strengthening TVA’s relationships with the 154 local power companies and 60 directly served industrial customers whose revenues represent over $11 billion annually.
Prior to his current position, Wardlaw led the development of TVA’s Integrated Resource Plan and worked in the commercial sector as executive vice president of power supply and fuels. He was also senior vice president for commercial operations and vice president of bulk power trading. Wardlaw was named vice president of transmission and reliability in TVA’s energy delivery business unit in December 2000. In that role, he was responsible for real-time control of TVA’s then-32,000-megawatt generation fleet and 17,000 miles of transmission lines. His group also served as the NERC reliability coordinator for five other regional utilities, overseeing reliability for 12 states in the Southeast and Midwest.
Wardlaw previously was vice president of transmission operations and maintenance—he has worked in all aspects of power operations and energy delivery. In addition, he has served in various leadership roles in customer service, economic development and marketing. He currently serves on the Executive Committee for the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence. Wardlaw received a B.S./B.A. in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University and is a registered professional engineer. He earned his master’s degree in business administration at the University of Mississippi. He has been designated a distinguished fellow of the Mississippi State University Bagley College of Engineering and is a certified power executive.
