TVA Work Closes Parts of Guntersville Levee Walking Trail

October 9, 2013

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. – Parts of the Guntersville Levee Walking Trail will be closed from Wednesday, Oct. 9, until Monday, Oct. 14, as the Tennessee Valley Authority examines the levee as part of a "health check" update of all dams in the TVA system.

TVA's dams are safe, and the health check is part of a continuous improvement campaign to make sure they meet today's stringent industry safety standards

Sections of the trail will be blocked with cautionary signage near TVA work zones, and trail users will see equipment being used in the geotechnical evaluations.

The trail, which is about 2 miles long and located near Highway 227, is designed for walking, running and bicycling. The trail runs across an earth-and-rock levee built in 1939.

During the health check, the integrity of the levee and surrounding area will be tested. To perform the health checks, TVA is drilling and using electrical equipment to survey the rock and soil at and near the structure.

The work does not harm the dam or the environment and will help TVA engineers affirm the structural integrity of the dams.

The work is expected to be completed and the trail reopened by Oct. 14, depending on weather, geotechnical conditions and other factors.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power distributors serving 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states. TVA receives no taxpayer funding, deriving virtually all of its revenues from sales of electricity. In addition to operating and investing its revenues in its electric system, TVA provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists local power companies and state and local governments with economic development and job creation.
