Maintenance Work To Affect Level of Boone Reservoir
November 22, 2006
GRAY, Tenn. – TVA has begun lowering the water level of Boone Reservoir to around 1,358 feet above sea level, which is about four feet below normal, to permit routine maintenance on the intake gates to the powerhouse.
The intake gates control the flow of water to the hydropower turbine at the dam.
TVA will also close the visitor parking area at the Boone Hydro Plant, beginning Monday, Nov. 27, because it will be used as a staging area to store equipment used in the work on the intake gates. The visitor area is expected to reopen at the end of January.
TVA will hold the reservoir level near elevation 1,358 through January 2007. The reservoir will then fill to normal seasonal levels. The normal winter level of Boone Reservoir is about 1,362, but the level will depend on the amount of rainfall and runoff (water that drains into the reservoir).
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.7 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
