TVA to Hold Open House on Proposed Power Supply Upgrades

Dec. 5, 2003

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — TVA will hold an open house Tuesday, Dec. 9, to hear comments and discuss issues on a proposed power line that would serve a new Savannah substation planned by Tennessee Valley Electric Cooperative.

The open house will be from 3 to 7 p.m. in the auditorium of TVEC’s office at 515 Florence Road in Savannah.

Power demand in the eastern Savannah area is increasing as a result of commercial and residential growth. To meet the growing power needs, TVEC, the local distributor of TVA power, plans to build a new substation near Highway 64 and Airport Road.

Studies show that the growth could cause the power supply system to become overloaded by the summer of 2005, resulting in potential power outages and voltage fluctuations, unless other methods of electric power service become available.

TVA’s proposed 161-kilovolt transmission line to provide power to the new substation would originate near TVEC’s Savannah Substation on Cherry Street. The proposed route for the line is a path going south along the old Pickwick-Savannah line for 2.2 miles, where it would cross State Route 69. The proposed route would continue east on a new 100-foot-wide right-of-way for approximately 0.5 miles, turn northeast, and continue along the west side of Horse Creek. North of Pinhook Road, the route of the line would follow the east side of Horse Creek to a point about 0.2 miles north of U.S. Highway 64, where it would turn east to the new substation.

The proposed route presented to Savannah-area residents in the spring of 2002 was abandoned because of high construction costs related to the unconventional design and relocation of the TVEC substation.

Property owners whose land may be affected by the current project are being notified of the open house by mail. Those attending the open house will be able to examine maps and provide comments on the proposed project. Following the open house, maps will be available at the Hardin County Courthouse and the Hardin County Library, 1365 Pickwick St. TVA will accept comments through Jan. 19, 2004.
