TVA to Hold Open House on Proposed Power Supply Upgrades

Nov. 6, 2003

MURPHY, N.C. — TVA will hold an open house Tuesday, Nov. 18, to discuss and hear comments on a proposed new power line to serve a new substation, which Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation plans to build to serve the Ranger area.

The open house will be from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Ranger Community Center, 155 Little Ranger Road in Murphy.

Blue Ridge Mountain EMC, the local distributor of TVA power, plans to build a new substation to meet growing power needs in the area. During the last decade, the Ranger area has experienced about 8 percent residential growth.

Assessments show that the growth could cause the power supply system to become overloaded by the summer of 2005, resulting in potential power outages and voltage fluctuations, unless other methods of service become available.

The proposed power supply upgrades include the construction of a new 161-kilovolt substation by Blue Ridge Mountain EMC along the north side of U.S. 64 at its intersection with Wingate Road, and a new TVA 161-kV transmission line to provide power to the substation. The proposed transmission line would be approximately five miles long and would originate at an established TVA transmission line east of the proposed substation and end at the substation.
.
At the open house, TVA staff will be available to discuss two alternative routes being considered for the power line. Those attending the open house will be able to examine maps and provide comments on the proposed project.

Property owners whose land may be affected by the project are being notified of the open house by mail.
