TVA to Test Warning System at Colbert Fossil Plant
Oct. 22, 2003
CHEROKEE, Ala. — Residents near TVA’s Colbert
Fossil Plant may hear alarms from a new emergency notification system
being
installed and tested at the power plant between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
weekdays Thursday, October 23, through Friday, October 31.
Local community and law enforcement officials have been
notified of the alarm testing. Residents should ignore alarms from the
site during the
testing period and not report them to 911 emergency dispatchers.
The new alarm system is designed to warn employees
in the event of an emergency at the plant and is capable of producing
three different
tones
as well as voice messages.
Colbert Fossil Plant is located on Pickwick Landing Reservoir
near Cherokee, Ala. The plant generates about seven billion kilowatt-hours
of electricity
a year, enough to supply more than 470,000 homes.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer and is completely self-financed.
TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve
8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
