TVA Clean Marina Initiative Wins North American Lake Award

Dec. 12, 2003

The TVA-led Tennessee Valley Clean Marina Initiative has received the Technical Merit Award for “extending effective and creative education in lake restoration, protection and management.”

The award was presented to TVA by the North American Lake Management Society at the 23rd International Symposium in Mashantucket, Conn., in November.

Since implementing the Clean Marina Initiative in 2000, TVA has certified 24 Tennessee Valley marinas for achieving the high environmental standards required for Clean Marina certification. To receive the designation, marinas must meet all federal, state and local regulations related to marina management, implement a number of recommended practices to minimize pollution, and encourage boaters to become effective stewards of water resources.

TVA’s regional, voluntary CMI is being used as a model for CMI efforts in other parts of the country. TVA has responded to requests from as many as 10 other agencies or municipalities, supplying program materials and support for development of new Clean Marina programs.

“The Tennessee Valley Clean Marina Initiative promotes clean boating and clean marina practices through its programs and educational efforts,” said TVA Director Skila Harris. “TVA is committed to preserving water quality in the Valley through integrated management of the Tennessee River system and environmental stewardship.”

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits including flood control, navigation, water quality and recreation.
