TVA Board To Hold Hearing on Transmission Access

May 11, 2006

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. -- The TVA Board will hold a hearing Thursday, May 18, in Hopkinsville, Ky., to hear comments from distributors of TVA power and other interested parties on the issue of transmission access.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Conference and Convention Center. It is the first hearing under the new Board governance structure.

The purpose of the hearing is for the Board to obtain information and receive input on the issue of whether, and under what circumstances, TVA should provide access to its transmission system to serve distributors of TVA power that wish to seek another power supplier.

Legislation creating the nine-member, part-time Board provides that the Board may hold public hearings as it deems appropriate on issues that could have substantial effect on TVA ratepayers, or on the environmental, social or physical well-being of the people in the TVA service area.

Witnesses have been invited to speak at the hearing, which will generally follow the style of congressional hearings. The hearing is open to public observation, and anyone wishing to comment on the issue may submit written comments to the TVA Board. Those written comments will become part of the record of the hearing.

The Board will also hold a public meeting at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Conference and Convention Center at 2 p.m. on May 18. At this meeting, the Board will consider and act on the items on the regular agenda.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing with revenues of $7.8 billion in 2005. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
