Contract Employee Dies in Accident at Kingston Recovery Site
An accident earlier today at Kingston Fossil Plant has claimed the life of contract worker Larry LaCroix, who was supporting the Kingston recovery efforts.
Site management released the following statement:
- At approximately 9:25 a.m., there was an injury to a worker on the Kingston Recovery Site. At approximately 11:30 a.m., we learned the injury resulted in a fatality.
- An employee of a trucking company was bringing in a load of dredge pipe on a flat-bed truck. He unfastened the straps that hold the pipe in place readying it to be off-loaded. When he did so, a pipe rolled from the truck on top of him. He was transported by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
- All work was stopped on the site for the day and all workers were brought in to be briefed on the situation. TVA notified the Occupational Safety & Health Administration of the accident and is conducting an accident investigation as we do with any significant safety event.
- The company that the driver worked for is W.W. Transport Inc., Burlington, Iowa, a vendor of L.W. Matteson, also out of Burlington, Iowa, a sub-contractor to Sevenson Environmental Services, Niagra Falls, N.Y., the dredge contractor recently hired to provide significant dredge work at the site.
“On behalf of TVA, we extend our condolences and deepest sympathy to the members of the LaCroix family and to Mr. LaCroix’s fellow workers and friends,” says Anda Ray, senior vice president of TVA’s Office of Environment & Research.
“This is a sad day for everyone working at the Kingston site. The safety of TVA employees and the contractors with whom we work is of the utmost importance.
“We need to know what happened and why, as soon as possible, so that everyone touched by this accident can make the necessary changes to prevent a recurrence.”
Most work at the site is expected to resume tomorrow. Grief counselors will be available if site workers are interested in speaking to anyone about the accident. LaCroix lived in Burlington, Iowa. Survivors include a wife and a son.
