Wilson Dam Bascule Bridge Replacement
Colbert and Lauderdale Counties, Alabama
In March, 2008, TVA issued a final environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact related to the construction of a new access bridge to the main lock and operations building and the replacement of the bascule bridge at Wilson Dam. TVA and the United States Army Corps of Engineers share responsibilities for various structural and operational features of Wilson Dam and its locks, including the bascule bridge. The Corps cooperated with TVA in preparing the 2008 environmental assessment.
Wilson Dam is a National Historic Landmark. During construction of the replacement access bridge, the bascule bridge was left in place to provide vehicular and equipment access to the main lock facilities. The replacement bridge to the main lock is now operational, and the bascule bridge is no longer needed. TVA has prepared a supplemental environmental assessment to document the potential environmental effects of retiring the bascule bridge.
